From the recording It Shines
Lyrics
It was early in the morning
I think i was about the age of nine
The first time i asked my dad the question: why does the sun shine?
He smiled a smile bigger than the new day
Looked me in the eye and shook his head
Gently put his hand upon my shoulder
And whispered, ‘here’s what my daddy said’
‘
He said ‘it shines because the fireflies are sleeping
And it shines so the stars can find their place
It shines so we know there is a reason
And it shines so i can see your face
In the autumn we would walk down by the river
A couple hours after suppertime
When the moon would rise above the tree-line
I would ask, why does it shine?
He said ‘it shines because the fireflies are sleeping
And it shines so the stars can find their place
It shines so we know there is a reason
And it shines so i can see your face
I don’t recall if I were happy with his answers
I must have been ‘cause I never asked again
I never found a better explanation
And forgot about it all, until the day when
My son woke me in the morning
With a smile that looked an awful lot like mine
Gently put his head upon my shoulder
And whispered, ‘why does the sun shine?
I said it shines because….…..
